The Fishing Family Punter (So very different but brings back memories of Mlungusi Dam on Zomba Plateau)

Lake Rotoiti (“the small lake”) is actually a relatively large lake lying to the east of Rotorua, and is connected to Lake Rotorua by the Ohau Channel. It’s a popular spot for boaties, it features good walking tracks and there is a beautiful beach at Korokitewao Bay for swimming and picnicking. It is extremely popular with anglers wishing to fish for trophy Rainbow trout - and Ray's pictures below surely confirms this.

(3) 3 October 2020 - Daughter-in-law Cathy and her fish, 7lbs 8 ozs, taken in Hauparu Bay. (4) 18 April 2021 - Son Graham and Hauparu Bay again, 6 lbs 10 ozs this time.
Note: For the aficionado these magnificent beasts were all caught using the Grey Ghost streamer pictured left.

| Left to right: (1) Technology always helps. This depth sounder records the depth of water, its temperature and the depth of each individual fish. (2) The trout normally feed on 'smelt' (small minnow like fish) but their diet also include fresh water crayfish (koura) pictured here. Recently removed from the stomach of one of the caught fish two were found to be still alive and swam off when released into the water! (3) 13 March 2021 - Caught by Daughter-in-law Cathy's father, Bob Jollands, this 6lbs 5ozs rainbow won 3rd prize in the Lockwood Annual Trout Fishing Conpetition held on the lake.
|
| Left to right: (1) Ray's fish smoker, depending on temperature, weather and size of fish procedure can take 4-8 hrs (no longer the biscuit tin used for the Mlungusi rainbows then). (2) A trout fillet duly smoked and vacuum packed ready to give away above and, below, a filleted fish packed ready for the freezer to be smoked at a later date. (3) Fish being prepared for smoking. Preparation includes 24 hours in brine and 24 hours in the fridge. Bob Jollands winning 6 pounder+ is at the top!
